Hoboken takes some of the pain out of massive school budget tax hike by slashing district wish list

Hoboken school district officials took a hacksaw to the proposed 2024-25 budget, slashing a staff wish list and adjusting some major purchases, to whittle down what would have been a 24% increase to 15%, district officials said.

Major adjustments included eliminating the purchase of a new school bus, changing the purchasing arrangement for new modular classrooms and outsourcing the district’s after-school program, said Superintendent Christine Johnson.

The spending plan is still not final, but the school board approved the amended version last week, and that will be the version presented at the district’s April 30 budget hearing. The new tax increase would mean an additional $385 per year for the average homeowner, down from an initial increase of $632.
