Aspire to Inspire

For nearly two years, Desmond Durham, 35, of Newark, worked three jobs while in graduate school. On Tuesday, May 23, 2023, he's graduating with a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Montclair State University. "Getting to this point hasn't been easy," Durham said. "But man, it's been worth it." Steve Hockstein | For NJ Advance

Newark resident Desmond Durham has always been a go-getter. But in the last two years, the 35-year-old’s kicked his drive into high gear: The single father’s been busy working not one, not two, but three jobs while at the same time pursuing a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership at Montclair State University.

By day, he’s a health and physical education teacher at Barringer High School. In the afternoon, he works as the district coordinator for Newark’s elementary basketball program. And by night, he’s a teacher for adults pursuing their General Education Diplomas or GEDs at Newark Evening High School.
